Bharat Bandh 2024 in Response to SC/ST Reservation Verdict

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has called for a Bharat Bandh today, August 21, 2024,

as a protest against the Supreme Court’s recent decision on SC/ST reservations. In Rajasthan, SC/ST communities have shown their support for this bandh.

According to a report from The Times of India, police across all districts have been instructed to increase their presence to prevent any potential unrest.

DGP UR Sahoo stated that instructions have been given to the Superintendents of Police (SPs) to maintain law and order during the Bharat Bandh. “We have directed our officials to hold discussions with the groups organizing the bandh and with market associations to ensure smooth cooperation,” Sahoo told TOI.

Reason for Bharat Bandh

The Supreme Court ruling at the center of this protest allows states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST communities,

with the reasoning that “priority in reservation should be This decision has sparked widespread controversy, with many arguing it should be reserved for those who genuinely need it. Reports indicate that the primary aim of the Bharat Bandh is to challenge this ruling and demand its reversal.

Anticipating potential violence, top police officials held a video conference meeting to discuss preparation. Reports state that divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and senior police officers all attended the meeting. Western Uttar Pradesh, considered particularly sensitive, has been placed on high alert,

with officials taking extensive measures to ensure public safety during the protests.

While public transportation and private offices typically shut down during such protests, emergency services like ambulances will continue to operate.
